
A Conversation with Dr. Josep Brugada: A Cartography of Cardiovascular Health
Dr. Josep Brugada is one of the world’s leading figures in cardiology and one of the most respected and admired voices in medical communication. A Senior Consultant at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Director of the Pediatric Arrhythmia Unit at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, Senior Consultant at Centro Medico Teknon and Clínica Rotger, and Director of the Arrhythmia Unit on the Vitalera platform, he described, together with his brothers, the disease responsible for sudden cardiac death that today bears his name: Brugada Syndrome, in 1992. A pioneer in the application of the most advanced techniques and technologies in the treatment and prevention of cardiac diseases, his educational, scientific, and research work is reflected in more than 500 articles published in the world’s leading international journals in medicine and cardiology. Recognized with prestigious awards worldwide, Dr. Josep Brugada also led the sports cardiology team of FC Barcelona and has been one of the foremost advocates for the implementation of defibrillators in public, private, and especially sports spaces.
His excellence has been recognized with prestigious global awards, including the Golden Lionel Award at the Venice Arrhythmia Congress, the prestigious Grand Scientific Prize of the Institut de France, awarded by the French Academy of Sciences, the American College of Cardiology Young Investigator Award (1991), the Fritz Acker Award from the German Society of Cardiology (2002), the Rey Jaime I Prize in Clinical Medicine (2015), the Josep Trueta Award, and several honorary doctorate degrees (honoris causa) from multiple international universities.
A leading adviser on international projects including projects in digital medicine and artificial intelligence Dr. Josep Brugada also served as President of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) and as Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal, coordinating clinical guidelines implemented directly in international hospitals.
Dr. Josep Brugada’s career has close ties to France, as it was at the University of Montpellier that he obtained his official specialist qualifications in Cardiology, Biology, and Sports Medicine. During this four-year period, he worked actively as a physician in the Department of Cardiology at Saint-Éloi Hospital and as a researcher in the university’s Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory.
