Immersive Art in Airports and Cultural Spaces

Pioneering XR and immersive digital experiences by Houda Bakkali, presented across airports, civic centres, cultural and institutional spaces.

Through augmented reality, mixed-media painting and educational outreach, often placing Arab woman at the centre of the narrative, her projects transform cultural environments into accessible, interactive and contemporary experiences, from Barajas and Costa del Sol airportsDon Quixote through Extended Reality, to Barcelona’s civic centres, among others cultural and public spaces.

For several years, Houda Bakkali has brought and expanded her practice and creative method across high-traffic public spaces, community-based civic centres, cultural venues, rural contexts, digital heritage and educational initiatives, as well as institutions traditionally associated with canonical models of artistic presentation.

Through her projects, she has developed a fusion between physical canvases and multimedia and interactive environments, enabling audiences not only to discover and engage with this dialogue and assess its impact beyond purely artistic appreciation, but also to explore the uses, applications, and challenges of technology applied to contemporary artistic practices.

Through a range of workshops and talks, her work has further examined the role of art and technology as tools for dissemination, communication, and public engagement in fields such as tourism, culture, and medicine, fostering digital literacy by making new ecosystems of digital creativity accessible to non-specialist audiences and a wide range of institutions.

In doing so, she has opened new spaces for public debate around the evolving roles of art and the artist in the post-digital era, addressing their responsibilities, possibilities, and contemporary challenges.

Her artistic universe transforms cultural and public environments into accessible, interactive and contemporary experiences.
