Shaping The Capsules Of Health Communication | Interconnected Nodes Of Art, Tech And Entertainment Through Virtual Reality

For years, I have been expanding the reach of my educational projects through virtual reality (VR). They are part of my masterclasses because, from a theoretical perspective, they contribute an interesting discourse, but their practical application involves important nuances that must be considered in detail before undertaking a project in which we immerse ourselves 100% in a virtual environment.

If we begin by analyzing the advantages, perhaps the most important would be the possibility of providing a 360-degree immersive experience in which users not only experience the artwork from within, but can also interact with it, access its different layers, videos, audio, and links, turning it into an excellent communication tool that enables a high degree of interactivity, as well as the application of gamification and entertainment elements that convey messages dynamically, seeking to retain attention on the message and promote greater audience participation.

However, based on my experience, significant limitations arise if we decide to invest in this technology for large-scale projects. Among some of the considerations to keep in mind, I would highlight:

  • First, clearly explain the idiosyncrasies of VR and what distinguishes it from augmented reality (AR) or mixed reality (MR).
  • Consider that it requires a complete disconnection from the physical environment; unlike AR or MR, in 100% VR environments we lose contact with our visual and auditory surroundings.
  • Accessibility to VR devices. Assess the cost of VR headsets in relation to their rapid evolution and obsolescence. This is a factor that often renders these devices incompatible with new tools for creating or experiencing VR content.
  • Pay attention to hygiene. If these headsets are going to be shared in educational, exhibition, or other spaces, proper cleaning must be ensured.
  • Consider users’ tolerance of these devices: in many cases, they can cause dizziness, visual discomfort, or ergonomic discomfort.
  • Dependence on internet connectivity and battery life.
  • Consider that they can contribute to social isolation.
  • Consider that they can become a way of joining the —increasingly less prevalent— trend of virtual spaces, ultimately contributing to the digital divide for the sake of generating an impactful headline or filling an agenda with a more or less eye-catching event that may ultimately prove of little use.

When creating virtual reality projects, it is extremely important to define what we are creating and why, to know our target audience very well, to analyze results, and to maintain an extraordinary ability to adapt to the pace demanded by the development and practical application of these technologies. Create with purpose, fostering proposals that are adapted to all generations, accessible, and cross-cutting, that provide utility and go beyond trends.

Health Communication Capsules: Timeless Art vs. Ephemeral Technology

The Role of the Artwork

In my projects, physical artworks take on different versions and adapt to different spaces, projects, and narratives. This dynamic requires not only mastery of different visual languages, continuous professional development, and knowledge of production, post-production, and dissemination tools which are becoming increasingly numerous and intuitive but, above all, a clear understanding of the concept.

In the world of virtual creation, the magic of arithmetic directly intervenes in the artworks, transforming them into different pieces that allow me to add a playful layer so that the public can enter each knowledge capsule through a dreamlike vision and a playful space, but one in which I deliberately pursue an ultimate purpose: utility.

Each artwork, each creative knowledge capsule, contains a message that the public can access and interact with, while sharing it in real time without spatial limitations.

Technology

Although the learning curves involved in developing VR projects are becoming less steep, professional expertise is still required to complete projects in which creativity, usability, accessibility, and utility advance at the same pace. Although all my projects begin with my physical artwork, adapting them to VR spaces requires developing the space itself, interconnecting each piece of content with its container, working on post-production details, considering the longevity of each project, and choosing the right platform where the public will immerse themselves in the artwork. This is no longer simply about mastering one tool or another; here we are talking about method, planning, development, and analysis of results.

Technology, as I always emphasize, will serve in these spaces as the engine for amplifying the message, helping us convey our work without spatial, temporal, or generational limitations. The development of technology also empowers us to make decisions about how to work, where to exhibit, which tools to create with, and through which media to disseminate our work.

The Artist

Although the tension between users’ increasing technological capabilities and the challenges of digital literacy in many societies remains, despite the challenges posed by technological obsolescence and the risks that trends and spikes in attention-grabbing headlines may diminish the value of the immersive digital creativity ecosystem, minimizing its importance beyond art itself, the reality is one of increasing decentralization for creatives, with significant challenges and major opportunities, transforming artworks into capsules of creativity, knowledge, and participation. As artists, we acquire greater skills and more freedom, but also much greater responsibility.

The Public

In these VR spaces, the user controls the scene and the setting. Users move through the artwork and can interact with it, deciding what to see and what to activate at any given moment. Hence the importance of creating captivating environments that also offer intuitive navigation, with a well-structured narrative that will then be approached freely by the viewer. The public is another part of the artwork, and from the moment we begin the project, it must also be an essential part of every decision we make.

The Message

The message is at the core of these knowledge creative capsules designed to inform, educate, and entertain, presenting an appealing duality: the artwork remains and can take on new lives and belong to new spaces, reinventing itself infinitely. Meanwhile, the ephemeral nature of the virtual version is almost perceived as a sentence from the very moment it is conceived.

Knowledge Capsules for Health Communication

Although in my projects all immersive, interactive, and audiovisual technologies are allies in the dissemination of culture, education, tourism, or in optimizing marketing and communication processes, the field of health is, without a doubt, the leading area for the practical application of these technologies.

They always open a window of novelty for highly diverse audiences, from experts to patients, from campaigns designed to raise awareness and inform the general public to students from different disciplines and age groups. They break down spatial barriers, allowing content to circulate across different contexts and promoting the universalization of content of social interest. They enable immediate updates and real-time project traceability, and they always require us to create with a discipline far removed from the blank canvas, focusing on the message, establishing a hierarchy of content, and ensuring that these virtual journeys are well scripted.

Creativity and entertainment must serve the purpose of communicating, being useful, and adapting to the spaces that host them, providing not only visual quality and technical innovation, but also practical and beneficial content for the recipient; this will most likely make our work memorable.

In this context, health communication is at the forefront of my work. Virtual immersion translates into a tool capable of creating interconnected immersive universes of unimaginable capacity that we can create, edit, and carry in our pockets, share around the world through a simple QR code or URL, update, and measure their reach in real time.

But at the same time, it is a virtual and ephemeral container that can cease to exist at any moment, that in most cases is tied to temporary campaigns or events, and that will only achieve its ultimate goal if we are able to create it with a clear method, a distinctive style, and effective communication, so that for as long as it lasts, it is truly participatory, educational, and useful.
